Lando Norris signs a multi-year extension to his contract with the McLaren F1 team. The Brit, who joined the team in 2019, has already won two podium finishes for the British racing team.
The news comes after a podium finish at Imola in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. There, the Brit showed massive potential and pace, also keeping the prancing horses at bay.
Having been a member of the McLaren team for the last 5 years, Lando’s goal is “to win races and world championships.” He believes that the team has ‘shown [Lando] that they’re able to build a car for me to do that in.’
Norris Comments on Contract Extension
“I feel very much part of the family here and I couldn’t imagine starting the next phase of my career anywhere else” Norris said.
“McLaren has been a huge support since my days in junior series and I’ve really enjoyed learning and developing as a driver since.
“My commitment to McLaren is clear: my goal is to win races and become Formula 1 World Champion and I want to do that with this team.
This comes to many as not a surprise. The Brit’s performance in the MCL35M seemed incredible over the course of this season. He nearly qualified at the top of the grid in Imola, having his time deleted due to track limits. Afterwards he then went on to finish third overall.
Lando Norris Signs McLaren Extension – “Very Straightforward”
Lando is also currently 4th in the drivers’ standings, placing him above his teammate Daniel Ricciardo, both Ferrari drivers and Red Bull driver Sergio Perez. McLaren now has their driver line-up finalised through 2022. This is when the new regulations will come into play and will consequently mix up the grid.
“I’m delighted with the extension of our agreement with Lando for 2022 and beyond” commented Zak Brown, McLaren CEO, on the subject.
“Lando is one of the brightest talents on the Formula 1 grid and we look forward to seeing him continue to go from strength-to-strength both on and off track.
“He’s been instrumental in our return of form here at McLaren and we’re proud of the growth he’s shown since he first started with us back in 2017” he continued.
Andreas Seidle, McLaren F1 Team Principal, said the decision was ‘very straightforward.’
“In Lando and Daniel we have a hugely talented and exciting driver line-up, and this announcement is a strong signal of commitment to the next chapter for McLaren from 2022 onwards.”
